This course will review the trends that have led to an interest in spirituality in the workplace, and will explore its many definitions. We will assess the application of spirituality in the workplace at four levels of analysis: individual, group, organizational, and societal. Topics covered will work as a spiritual path, leadership and spirituality, spirituality in teams, and systemic organizational approaches to creating enlightened organizations.

In this course we will explore a new paradigm that is emerging in business ? Spirituality in the Workplace.  A recent issue of ?U.S. News & World Report (May 3, 1999) reports, ?In the past decade, more than 300 titles on workplace spirituality ? from Jesus CEO to The Tao of Leadership ? have flooded the bookstores?.Indeed, 30 MBA programs now offer courses on this issue. It is also the focus of the current issue of Harvard School Bulletin.? Signs of this sudden concern for corporate soul are showing up everywhere: from boardrooms to company lunchrooms; from business conferences to management newsletters, from management consulting firms to business schools.  Echoing Andre Malraux ? who said that the next century?s task will be to rediscover its Gods ? some management thinkers are prophesizing that the effective leaders of the next century will be spiritual leaders

This first weekend in the series will look at what we mean by ?spirituality? and ?work?. A number of different approaches to spirituality and work will be examined. In particular we will explore what the Rule of St Benedict can teach us about attitudes to work and work practices? Discussion will focus on whether or not the recognition and acceptance of the spiritual dimension in our life of work is a help or a hindrance. Finally, can integrating our spiritual life with our work bring make the work-place more 'soul-friendly'?

Spirituality and Religion in the Workplace
Instructor: Don McCormick

This class examines how people from various religious and spiritual traditions integrate their spiritual lives with their work lives. Students also explore how they integrate their own spiritual (or deepest secular) values with their work. Topics include: Buddhist, Christian, Muslim, Twelve Step, Hindu, Jewish, and Taoist perspectives on work and leadership; work as a transcendent or meditative experience; selfless service; spiritually motivated career choice; compassion in the workplace, and the problems of integrating spirituality with work in a multicultural, pluralistic society. Cultural diversity is emphasized in that various religious and spiritual perspectives are examined.
